Sermon Title: Sermons from the Road – Take Time to Rest Rev. Chris Neikirk
Basic Theme: Last Summer I was blessed to take a 3500-mile solo journey on my motorcycle out West. This adventure afforded me hundreds of hours of alone time spent chasing the wind and resting in the midst of God’ s creation. I had time to think, pray, read, and talk to God … I also had time to listen … although admittedly, I should have done more listening. As with most preachers, we’ re always looking for good material. I hope I found some and I hope you enjoy my Sermons from the Road!
Sermon Snapshot( Key Points): Work is good. Accomplishing something feels good. However, rest is important, too. On the seventh Day, God rested and declared it holy. Jesus often withdrew to a solitary place to rest. On one occasion, his disciples were weary and so he took them away to rest. What happened next was one of the most well-known miracles in the Bible.
So What? Some of us are not good at resting and even when we have time to just“ be,” our mind just won’ t let us rest. Do you regularly take a Sabbath dedicated to rest and reconnecting with God? What will it take for you to let go of your burdens and rest in God?
Gospel Reading: Genesis 2:1-3; Mark 6:30-32( NIV)
1
Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array. 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so, on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
30
The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. 31 Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them,“ Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” 32 So they went away by themselves in a boat to a solitary place.
