Join Us to Celebrate the completion of Mat # 100 on Sunday, July 19
Project Background A visit to Midwest Mission in Pawnee, Illinois, in late 2023 inspired the idea of making sleeping mats from plastic bags. Trinity’ s mat-making project began in February 2024, and by early June 2026, the 100th mat was completed. It has truly been a labor of love.
Community Impact Most of these mats have been distributed locally: 47 to Love Unlimited, which provides lunch and support to people experiencing homelessness on Saturday afternoons; 11 to St. Marks; and 7 to HOPE Southern Indiana. Two mats were given to ICAN in Indianapolis, and 17 were donated to Midwest Mission for international distribution. We have also helped launch looming projects at OLPH, St. Mary’ s of the Knobs, Stuart Middle School in Louisville, and indirectly through a Lion’ s Club in southwest Indiana. Most recently, we donated a loom, a mat, and supplies to the Senior Center at Red Bird Mission, where we taught a staff member and several seniors how to make mats to donate in their community.
Gratitude Many of you have supported this effort by donating bags, cutting and joining them into“ plarn,” weaving, finishing mats, and building or improving looms— all so the mats can be given to those in need. Over the past 2½ years, more than 60 people have contributed to this work. Most Tuesdays, 4 to 10 people take part, and there is always room for you to join us.

July read: The Aviator’ s Wife by Melanie Benjamin. The novel opens in 1974, with Anne on a plane beside her dying husband, Charles. She understands on an instinctual level that his death is imminent, but she is not ready to say goodbye to her longtime partner and the complicated though enduring relationship they share. She tugs down the window shade and looks back on her life, moving back in time to that fateful day when she met Charles Lindbergh. Please join us as we discuss the Lindbergs and their life and what made their remarkable relationship endure.
